NORAD: Fighter jets scrambled after Russian bombers spotted off California

Inte bara i Östersjön som ”inzidenter / övningar” pågår:

Authorities say two F-22 fighter jets were scrambled after a pair of Russian bombers were spotted 50 miles off the coast of California earlier this week, Reuters reported, citing a NORAD spokesperson.
Major Beth Smith, of North American Aerospace Defense Command, said that the long-range Russian bombers never officially entered U.S. airspace when two NORAD fighter jets made visual contact with them.
The incident occurred about five hours after four Russian bombers and a refueling tanker were seen entering the so-called Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), airspace that extends about 200 miles from the U.S. coast. The Russian aircraft left the ADIZ after being identified by two fighters from the Alaskan NORAD region, Smith said.
Smith said the Russian planes' flight appeared to be part of a routine training mission, which Russian aircraft have carried out dozens of times in recent years in the ADIZ.

Russian Bombers Threaten U.S. Air Space Near Alaska
Four Russian bombers entered the U.S. Air Defense Zone near Alaska on Monday, senior defense officials told NBC News on Thursday.
U.S. fighter jets from Alaska responded to shadow the Russian craft, which were Tupolev-95 "Bear" four-engine turboprop bombers, the officials said.
The four bombers split into two separate groups of twos: One group remained in the vicinity of Alaska, the other headed south off the northern coast of California, the officials said.
The Air Defense Zone is the area around the United States and Canada wherein aircraft are required to identify themselves.
The officials stressed that at no time did the bombers violate actual U.S. airspace and added that for the U.S. military, these forays are considered rather routine.
There have been about 50 such intercepts of Russian bombers over the past five years.

Övningsaktiviteten har helt klart ökat från Rysslands sida! Må vara från en låg nivå, men antalet övningsdagar för ryska Östersjöflottan hade tydligen stigit 3-4 ggr!

Finnish QRA not scrambled for Russians because of "overtime"
Russian aircraft made two incursions into Finnish airspace while flying the narrow corridor between Kaliningrad and St Petersburg on May 20th

The eastern Finnish newspaper published claims on Saturday that Air Force Hornet fighters were unable to scramble in time when Russian aircraft strayed twice into Finland’s airspace.

The paper claims that military training exercises that took place the week before the incursion impacted on the defence forces’ air-readiness.

Air Force Hornet fighters were unable to scramble in time when Russian aircraft twice breached Finnish airspace last week, the Finnish daily Savon Sanomat claimed on Saturday.

Finland’s Hornets were not ready to make an inspection flight until four hours after the Russian aircraft first strayed 30 kilometres into Finland’s airspace on May 20th, the paper said.

According to the paper, the delay was caused by the jets having made a series of training flights the week before the incursion took place.

As a result of the overtime incurred during the exercises, capacity for observation patrols was momentarily reduced, the paper claimed.

A Russian plane was reportedly prevented from making a third airspace violation once the Hornet fighters were in the air and patrolling the area.

Speaking on Yle’s morning politics show Ykkösaamu on Saturday, Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö admitted that defence resources are currently tight, but played down the significance of the incursion.

“The planes weren’t four hours late, they responded four hours after something that was insignificant happened,” the president said.

Niinistö repeated earlier claims by Finland’s defence chief that the narrowness of the air corridor between Kaliningrad and St Petersburg, through which the aircraft were flying, makes it highly likely that the Russian plane strayed into Finnish airspace accidentally.

Russian Aircraft Incursions Near US Increase Amid Friction

The Russian military may be testing U.S. air defenses, with at least 16 incursions by foreign aircraft having been logged in American "air defense identification zones" in the past 10 days, The Washington Free Beacon reported.

Such penetrations near U.S. territory have occurred as America's relations with Russia have suffered amid its stance on Ukraine, prompting U.S. jets to scramble on occasion to intercept the incoming Russian aircraft, the Free Beacon's Bill Gertz reported.

"Over the past week, NORAD has visually identified Russian aircraft operating in and around the U.S. air defense identification zones," Maj. Beth Smith, spokeswoman for U.S. Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command, told the website.

She said the United States viewed the heightened activity as more training than aggression as a higher number than usual of Russian aircraft were seen primarily along the Alaskan air zone with one incursion entering Canadian airspace.

Among the Russian aircraft observed testing the waters near U.S. borders were Tu-95 Bear H heavy bombers, Tu-142 Bear F maritime reconnaissance aircraft, and one IL-20 intelligence collection aircraft, Smith said.

Defense officials not identified by the Free Beacon told the website they were concerned about Russia's strategic nuclear forces coming closer to the United States.

"These are not just training missions," one defense official said.

The increase in sightings comes after other accounts of Russian jet aggression. In July, the day after the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in the Ukraine, a U.S. surveillance plane flew into Swedish air space to avoid Russian fighter jets, The New York Times reported.

"The aircraft commander, acting in a professional and safe manner, maneuvered the aircraft to avoid a possible encounter by Russian aircraft," according to a statement released to the Times from the U.S. European Command.

In June, four Russian bombers were observed close to U.S. air space near Alaska, NBC News reported. The Tupolev-95 "Bear" four-engine turboprop bombers split into two groups with two flying toward the Alaska coast and the other two heading toward the Northern California coastline.

U.S. military described such flights as routine and said the Russian bombers never entered U.S. airspace. About 50 Russian bombers have been intercepted close to the United States in the past five years, NBC said.

US Plane Ducks Into Swedish Air Space to Avoid Russian Fighters

Seeking to avoid being intercepted by Russian fighters, a U.S. reconnaissance plane flying over the Baltic Sea ducked into Swedish airspace last month, The New York Times reported on Sunday, citing U.S. military officials.

Reuters reported the Times as saying the episode occurred on July 18 when Russian aircraft approached an Air Force RC-135 electronic surveillance plane as it was flying in what U.S. officials said was international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

"The aircraft commander, acting in a professional and safe manner, maneuvered the aircraft to avoid a possible encounter by Russian aircraft," the United States European Command said in a statement, according to the Times.

Ties between the United States and Russia have plunged to their lowest level since the end of the Cold War over the crisis in Ukraine, which Washington accuses Moscow of fanning with weapons and support for rebels fighting the Kiev government.

The United States has expanded its intelligence-gathering in the region, including reconnaissance missions by RC-135 aircraft, the Times said.

It said that according to Swedish news media, the episode last month occurred as the RC-135 aircraft was flying near Kaliningrad, a heavily militarized Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania that includes a major port for the Russian Baltic fleet.

After being approached by Russian aircraft, the RC-135 pilot sought to avoid the encounter by maneuvering his aircraft into Swedish airspace, flying over Gotland Island.

Sweden is not a member of NATO, and the European Command said in its statement that the RC-135 had been directed toward Swedish territory "incorrectly by U.S. personnel," the Times reported.

The plane left Swedish airspace after Swedish air traffic controllers informed the aircraft of the mistake, the newspaper said.
