Under 1980-talet testade bl.a. Lockheed speciella prop-fan motorer och propellrar, där man skulle få ned bränsleförbrukningen mer än 40% och kunna få ut tämligen hög effekt med hög marschfart.
På den tiden förekom bilder med flygplan, bl.a. typ MD-80, som man visade med prop-fan motorer, med motroterande propellrar baktill.
Vad blev resultatet av dessa tester? Utvann man erfarenheter och teknik som används idag? På vilket sätt används tekniken i så fall?
Lockheed använde denna Grumman Gulfstream II för tester med en propfan-motor på vänster vinge. NASA sponsrade dessa tester.
Omkring år 1987 publicerades denna bild, som visade hur SAS flygplan skulle se ut under 1990-talet, men det blev aldrig så. Det påstods att den skulle ha en fart som inte var sämre än vanlig jet.

Jag har en minnesbild av att jag sett något sådant rellativt nyligen. Vilket väl innebär att man fortsatt på linjen med turbofläktmotorer utan kapsling.

Att det låter för djävligt om dem och sen sjönk bränslepriserna så intresset för ny teknik minskade. Så i valet (för motor- och flygplanstillverkare samt flygbolag) mellan antingen propfan eller jet det blev en ny generation turbofläktmotorer i stället.Sven-Erik Jönsson skrev:Vad blev resultatet av dessa tester?

It is so long since I heard anything about prop fans so I had just about forgotten all about them. With the exception, of course, that many Russian aircraft still have prop fan engines. I Googled a bit on prop fan and found the following:

I suppose that the next stage was the ducted fan engine like the one used in the Edgley Optica.

And we eventually finished up with the large fan engines installed in most commercial jets these days. If I am right, yes, we must have benefitted some way or another from the prop fan research.
I am not an engine man but I can see a link this way.

I think it is rather the other way around. First came the fan-jets or by-pass engines whatever they are called, then came the idea of the open fans. Which were noisy as Urban told us and as I also has heard of (sorry for the simple pun).
It could be that pressure from environmentalists will cause as to revert to turboprops, with lower cruisng altitudes and lower speeds than for present jets. Speed "costs", that is a basic physical fact we may have to obey. You can today achieve a L/D ratio of 15 (or even slightly more) at almost transonic speeds but I doubt it ever (?) will be possible to get better than 10 at supersonic speeds. I think the Concorde got a bit better than 7.
I have just now no figures what fuel it would save by flying with turboprop 10000 feet lower and 100 mph or so slower than with present jets.

I stand corrected. And thinking again the wonderful Convair 990A that Internord operated had GE fan engines. Except the fan was at the rear.
